Piedmont Merger Is Opposed

An administrative law judge ruled yesterday that the proposed merger of Piedmont Airlines into USAir would be anti-competitive and that it should be disapproved by the Department of Transportation.

An administrative law judge ruled yesterday that the proposed merger of Piedmont Airlines into USAir would be anti-competitive and that it should be disapproved by the Department of Transportation.

The proposed $1.6 billion merger, which would create the nation’s fifth-largest airline, ”would substantially reduce competition in relevant markets, would be contrary to the public interest and should be disapproved,” the judge, Ronnie A. Yoder, said.

But Edwin I. Colodny, chairman and president of USAir Group, called the ruling ”incomprehensible” and said that ”it would be a travesty if USAir and Piedmont were not allowed to merge.”
