Florio Lawyers Deny Unfair Campaign Fund Spending

Lawyers for the Florio campaign today denied Whitman campaign charges that the Governor gained an unfair advantage in campaign spending this year and said they scrupulously attempted to disclose how dollars were spent. But the campaign treasurer for Gov. Jim Florio, Robert Long, conceded that he had the final word on how dollars were distributed to a special committee set up to plan campaign events for Mr. Florio and the Democratic State Committee. The campaign for Christine Todd Whitman, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, contends that the Florio campaign violated state election law and gained an unfair advantage by “co-mingling” campaign funds and spending too early on the general-election campaign. Lawyers for both campaigns clashed in an administrative law hearing ordered by the State Election Law Enforcement Commission. An administrative law judge, Beatrice S. Tylutki, did not make any recommendation today but scheduled a second hearing for Wednesday to hear the Whitman campaign’s complaint that the Florio campaign should have paid for visits to the state by President Clinton and several cabinet members.
